I’m Steve Williams, and independent internet developer.

This web site is http://wpdemo.sbw.org.  I use this web site to try out various WordPress features, themes, and plugins, and to demonstrate WordPress to clients.

What Personal Data This Web Site Collects and Why

This web site does not intentionally collect any personal data, but if you view or use this web site, information about you may be collected as a side effect.

This web site does not directly engage in commercial activity.  Steve may have a commercial relationship with his clients, but any compensation Steve receives is for the work he performs for those clients.  This web site is incidental to his earning that compensation, so he believes this web site should not be considered a commercial web site.  Steve has not sought an expert legal opinion, so if you believe he is mistaken, and you believe you have been adversely affected by your use of this site, please contact Steve to begin a conversation.

Nevertheless, laws like GDPR properly control collection and use of everyone’s personal data.  So, while Steve believes it’s unlikely this site could lead to penalties related to commercial activity, Steve believes everyone has the same privacy rights, even here on this web site.

Also, this privacy policy and this site’s privacy controls are an opportunity for Steve and his clients to work with the WordPress privacy tools, learn from them, and apply them to client sites that may engage in commercial activity.

Comments

When visitors leave comments here, the site collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Cookies

If you leave a comment, you may opt-in to saving your name, email address, and web site in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you have an account and you log in, cookies will save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie with no personal data saves the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

I’m experimenting with Matomo analytics, which uses cookies. The following opt-out is generated by a shortcode provided by the Matomo plug-in:

Embedded Content From Other Web Sites

Articles on this site may include embedded content, e.g. videos, images, articles, etc., from other web sites.  Those embeds behave in the exact same way as when you visit the other web site.

These web sites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Who I Share your Data With

I don’t intentionally share your data with anyone.  Some of your data may be visible with other users who log in to this web site.

How Long I Retain Your Data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users who register, this web site stores the personal information they provide in their user profile. You can see, edit, or delete your personal information at any time (except you cannot change your username). Web site administrators, including Steve and selected clients, can also see and edit that information.

What Rights You Have Over Your Data

If you have an account on this site or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where I Send Your Data

Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

Contact Steve With Any Privacy Concerns

If you have any privacy concerns about this web site, contact Steve through sbw.org.

How I Protect Your Data

I rely on the WordPress developers to keep WordPress secure and create appropriate privacy tools.  For that reason, I keep this site updated frequently and monitor the WordPress project for vulnerabilities and other security and privacy concerns.

Data Breach Procedures

Steve has no formal procedure to follow if a data breach occurs on this web site.  Certainly Steve would disable this site as soon as possible and contact any affected clients and other people whose personal data is stored here.

Your Data Collected From Third Parties

This site does not seek or accept personal data about you from any other parties.  But this is an important part of other web sites’ privacy policies, so I’ll just use this space to encourage you to be aware that other web sites may be buying and using your personal data to manipulate and even endanger you.

Automated Decision Making or Profiling Using Your Data

Again, this web site doesn’t do anything with your data like deciding what information to show you or creating a profile for advertising, but I encourage you to be aware of that activity on other web sites.
